Recent changes in aviation security and how your travel insurance may be affected

Travel insurance Lark

As part of our broking service, we constantly monitor changes in legislation that may affect our clients.  Following the recent change in aviation security we have checked with our travel insurance providers to see how this could affect you.

What is the new legislation?

The UK Government has changed the aviation rules relating to electronic devices being carried in hand luggage travelling from any airport to the UK from the following countries, including indirect flights:

Turkey, Lebanon,  Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia

This new rule means that any electronic devices, including phones, laptops and tablets which exceed the dimensions set out by the Department for Transport will have to go into the hold luggage otherwise they will be confiscated. For classification on which devices and smart phones will be allowed in the cabin please click here.

If your item is confiscated it will not be returned, unless in exceptional circumstances and you cannot claim from the airport.  There is no information as to what airport security would define as an exceptional circumstance but failure to adhere to Government legislation would not be a valid reason.  As such you should assume that if an item is confiscated at the airport it cannot be reclaimed and would be destroyed.

What cover will my travel insurance provide?

There is no cover under any insurance policy for items that are confiscated or detained by any government, public or police authority. If this happens you will not be able to make a claim.

Most standalone travel insurance policies do not provide cover for lost, damaged or stolen electronic items unless they are being carried by you or in your hand luggage. If you have a Lark travel policy please speak to your Account Handler for confirmation of the cover your insurer will provide.

Will I have cover under my household policy?

We carefully select our panel of insurers, however if you have a Lark travel policy please speak to your Account Handler for confirmation of the cover your insurer will provide. Please contact us for confirmation or a quotation if you are not already insured with Lark, or click here to make an enquiry.

Our advice

We recommend that you consider carefully what devices are being taken on your trip.  If you decide to take a laptop or similar device make a note of the make, model and serial number.  Data should be backed up prior to travel and consider a case with a hard shell to reduce the risk of damage.

In addition, other countries have introduced their own security measures; please ensure to check on any possible restrictions which may apply to your journey before starting.

If your luggage goes missing you must get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from your airline carrier before you leave the airport. If this is not possible we recommend you call the customer services line or complete an online report of the loss immediately.
