The London Sinfonietta celebrates 50 years of music making
Since being found in 1968, the small chamber orchestra, London Sinfonietta now holds an international reputation. This year marks an important milestone as they prepare for their 50th-anniversary concert on Wednesday 24th January, the very same date as the very first concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
The London Sinfonietta takes musical risks – they commission new works, they champion emerging talented composers and work with young musicians who learn from their experienced Principal Players.
Over 10 years as part of the London Sinfonietta Academy programme, they have worked with and helped develop 250 young musicians
They sincerely believe that new music is for everyone and can inspire people to listen in new ways, this effort is focused mostly towards young people - last year they performed for over 1,000 schoolchildren. And they work directly with pupils and teachers in projects with London Boroughs where music provision is at its lowest.
Having commissioned over 350 new works London Sinfonietta reminds us that all music was once new music and considered either innovative or challenging at one time. They believe that risk-taking is imperative to creativity. To date, they have commissioned some of the most renowned composers of the 20th century such as Harrison Birtwistle, Iannis Xenakis, Gyogy Ligeti and Luciano Berio, now we are working with some of the most exciting talents around of this generation, such as Tansy Davies and Philip Venables.
Lark sponsors their groundbreaking World Premiere Wednesday series of concerts, whereby a short new piece of music is performed every other month to a breakfast time audience at locations in and around London.
David Foster, Lark's Private Clients Director, says "We are delighted to be working with the London Sinfonietta - an organisation that is at the cutting edge of contemporary music, with some of the best musicians in the country collaborating with new composers to create bold music that is both exciting and challenging”
