We appreciate that it can be difficult, for even the most experienced head teacher, to identify how much to budget for supply staff costs. However, the solution can be found in the form of a specialist insurance for schools scheme, which has been designed to enable you to insure against the costs of hiring supply staff.
There are two independent schemes, one for smaller Infant or Junior schools, and the Budget Protection Scheme designed for larger schools, accommodating 20 to 200 employees. Both schemes can include part-time, and non-teaching staff, ensuring the entire workforce is covered, and your school can continue to function and educate its pupils.

The Budget Protection scheme is a sophisticated schools insurance solution, allowing your school to retain control over your own staff absence budget. Removing concerns about the excessive costs of long term or increased levels of absence. We work with you to calculate an average budget, based on previous years’ absence costs and then provide protection against overspending.
We’ll help you answer that all important question, “How much should I budget for?”, and then you have the peace of mind that, if you do experience higher levels of absence, you are covered.
This option, known as an aggregate excess policy, is a proven alternative to traditional insurance, and is referred to in the DFES Supply Teacher Insurance publication, as possibly being the most efficient arrangement.
