Overseas Buildings Insurance: Are you in the dark?
02/07/2008 16:49

Insuring flats or apartments overseas is a different principal to what we are used to in the UK. And is often an area in which buyers are in the dark.

You may be insured by a block policy, which you pay for under a maintenance fee. But you should check what you are covered for, as there can be gaps in cover, higher excesses, deductions for wear and tear and exclusions for non-structural elements such as doors and windows. You are entitled to see a copy of the policy so you should request a copy when purchasing the property.

If you are not happy with the level of cover, or the reliability of the managing agent to renew the policy year on year, you can opt to insure your buildings on a separate policy. This enables you to have control over of the sums insured and the cover. But, there are downsides, including the fact that having two policies can make the claims process a more drawn out affair.

Remember that your contents also need to be insured, and we would strongly recommend that you insure the cost of your fixtures and fittings which includes air conditioning units, light fixtures, kitchens, bathrooms etc.

Why not have a chat with our overseas team about your particular circumstances, so that you can make an educated decision about which option is for you.

Cost isn't everything

Getting a cheaper quote may not always be the best option with your insurance. Whilst you may pay less on your premium, are you actually getting the cover that you need?

Before searching for your insurance, ask yourself exactly what it is you want from your policy and ensure that these areas are provided for under the policy. This will give you a better basis on which to find the best priced quote to match your requirements.

Most people would like to think that their insurance covers everything, but some policies don’t. So, find out exactly what cover you receive and if you ever need to make a claim you’ll know where you stand.

Paying that little bit extra for your insurance may be beneficial, as you are more likely to get your own account handler, who will gain knowledge of your specific needs and be able to advise you accordingly. In our experience clients are able to build a relationship with their handler, which can be comforting if you require advice or need to make a claim.

Cheaper policies, tend to rely on call centres, which can often be frustrating as you rarely speak to the same person. So remember, there may be more benefits than you are aware of.

Pass Plus
14/01/2008 15:11

Very few new drivers take advantage of Pass Plus and don’t understand the benefits of it.

Pass Plus is specially designed by The Driving Standards Agency to help increase confidence, skills and driving awareness. It has no test at the end but drivers must reach an ‘achieved’ standard. However it can only be obtained within the first year of passing your practical driving test.

Most insurers acknowledge Pass Plus and many apply a discount equivalent to approximately 1 year No Claims Bonus. If you have achieved Pass Plus, or are looking to take Pass Plus, and are unsure how it affects your motor insurance please contact your account handler.

Accidental Damage
20/12/2007 09:33

The festive season can become a succession of parties and celebrations, all of which opens up our home to an increase of risk from accidents.

Many home insurance policies do not protect against an accident so, if you spill red wine on your cream carpet, you wouldn’t be able to claim for the damage.

However, some policies do include, accidental damage cover, which insures against any damage resulting from an accident. Accidental Damage cover might automatically be included in your policy, or you may be able to choose it as an extension.

Having accidental damage cover gives you peace of mind, and it also takes the stress out of entertaining carefree guests in your home, allowing you to enjoy the celebrations as well. If you are unsure whether you are covered for accidents, speak to your account handler.
